Wall Street soared to new all-time highs on Thursday, driven by stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales data. Investor optimism around the U.S. economy’s resilience — and a recalibration of rate-cut expectations — pushed all three major indices into fresh record territory.
Market Snapshot
- 📈 Dow Jones: +0.52%
- 📈 S&P 500: +0.54%
- 🚀 Nasdaq: +0.75%
Retail sales data came in far above forecasts, signaling robust consumer spending despite high interest rates. This triggered a bullish response across equities and bolstered the dollar.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) surged 0.49% to close at 98.47, and hit an intraday high of 98.95 before paring some gains. Treasury yields were relatively muted, with the 2-year yield slipping 1 basis point to 3.894% and the 10-year yield down slightly at 4.445%.
Commodities React: Oil Rallies, Gold Eases
Geopolitical developments also influenced commodity markets. Reports of drone strikes in the Middle East sparked fears of supply disruption:
- 🛢️ Brent Crude: +1.46% to $69.63
- 🛢️ WTI: +1.75% to $67.63
Meanwhile, gold prices dipped 0.23% to settle at $3,338.59 an ounce, as the stronger dollar and reduced safe-haven demand weighed on the precious metal.
Dollar Strength: Fundamentals in the Driver’s Seat
The U.S. dollar’s upward trend continues as economic data surprises to the upside. Apart from this week’s softer PPI print, most indicators — including jobless claims and retail sales — have exceeded expectations. This has led traders to push back their expectations for a Fed rate cut in September.
From a trading psychology perspective, we are now entering a “buy-the-dip” phase for the dollar, especially against currencies not facing upcoming political risks. That said, USDJPY remains an exception, with Japan’s election this weekend likely to inject short-term volatility.
What’s Next? A Lighter Calendar But Heightened Sensitivity
Friday is expected to bring a quieter macro calendar, with only the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment and Inflation Expectations data on tap. However, traders remain on edge:
- Geopolitical headlines remain a potential wild card
- Japanese elections may influence yen crosses
- Fridays this year have shown a tendency for unexpected moves
Takeaways from Spec FX
At Spec FX, we interpret this market structure as a classic “momentum meets macro” situation. Strong economic signals are providing a runway for continued equity and dollar strength — but traders should not be complacent. With volatility always just a headline away, the risk-reward balance favors tactical positioning, particularly in:
- Long USD vs. low-beta currencies (e.g., EUR, AUD)
- Range trading in gold until clear directional confirmation
- Selective equity exposure in sectors tied to consumer strength
