A Strong Finish to the Week
US equities ended the week on a high note, with all three major indices climbing again on Friday. The Nasdaq surged 0.98% to close at a record 21,450, the S&P 500 gained 0.78% to 6,389, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.47% to 44,175.
The rally reflects sustained investor optimism, even as market participants brace for a potentially pivotal week ahead. Technology stocks led the charge, supported by solid earnings and upbeat economic sentiment.
Bonds, Currencies, and Commodities
In the bond market, US Treasury yields edged higher — the 2-year rose 3.4bps to 3.762%, while the 10-year climbed 3.3bps to 4.283%. The US Dollar Index (DXY) ticked up 0.14% to 98.27, holding within familiar ranges.
Oil prices remained subdued despite headlines that US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet on August 15. Brent crude settled slightly higher at $66.59 (+0.24%), while WTI was virtually unchanged at $63.88 (+0.02%).
Gold stayed steady at $3,396.60/oz (+0.04%), with traders largely shrugging off chatter about possible US tariffs on the metal.
Focus Turns to the RBA
The spotlight now shifts to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which meets tomorrow. Markets are pricing in a 25-basis point rate cut, following the Bank of England’s decision last week.
Unlike the UK, where persistent inflation complicates monetary policy, Australia’s case appears more straightforward — though the RBA surprised markets in its last meeting by holding rates steady.
If the RBA stands pat again, the Australian dollar (AUD) could rally sharply. Conversely, any hint of more cuts ahead would likely trigger heavy AUD selling. Traders will also closely watch Governor Michelle Bullock’s press conference for forward guidance.
A Quiet Start to a Big Week
This week begins with a light macro calendar, but it could be a turning point for global markets. Key events to watch:
- US Inflation Data — a major driver for Fed policy expectations.
- Trump–Putin Meeting (Aug 15) — potential geopolitical ripple effects.
- China’s New Loans Data — expected at CNY 360B today.
Japanese markets are closed for a holiday, reducing early liquidity. Over the weekend, China’s CPI came in slightly above expectations, while PPI slipped, prompting a muted market reaction.
Spec FX Outlook
- Equities: Momentum remains positive, but Nasdaq’s rapid gains could invite profit-taking.
- FX: AUD traders face binary risks ahead of the RBA decision; USD remains range-bound.
- Commodities: Oil may stay subdued unless geopolitical tensions escalate; gold is steady for now.
As we head into the week, traders should prepare for potential volatility driven by a combination of monetary policy decisions, economic data, and geopolitics.
